Lifestyle Home Newborn Session / Farmington, CT
There are many reasons to do a newborn photoshoot, and there are many ways. Some like to have a lot of props, others prefer to keep the props to minimum if at all, some like cute various poses that a baby normally wouldn’t take, others go for natural lifestyle posing, some like to focus on the newborn, others like to incorporate family and their relationships, some favor a plain not-distracting studio setting, others want their home to serve as a backdrop. There is no right or wrong way for the style of a newborn session, and it’s also OK not to be sure which style your heart leans towards. Each style has it’s merits and all serve the same purpose – to capture the fleeting first days of the baby’s life, to create a memory for parents of how tiny, innocent, trusting and helpless their child once was, to celebrate the overwhelming joy, love and tenderness that pours from parents’ hearts, to capture all the small newborn details that go away so quickly – the pouty lips, the wrinkly tiny legs, the peach fur on ears and back, the wisp of soft hair sticking out on the head crown.
This family wanted to incorporate their new sun lit home into the session. With huge floor to ceiling windows, gorgeous colors, and sophisticated design, their house was a perfect candidate for the task. There is something magical, soft, and homely about natural light home photography, so having large windows and lots of light is a huge plus, and sometimes a must.
Baby R. was a little older at the time of the session – about 4 weeks, therefore he was more alert and less sleepy which allowed for candid interactive photos. At a lifestyle session, parents hold the baby, interact with him or her, play, sing songs, kiss, cry, nurse, and hug. A home lifestyle session is not that much about posing, although I would direct the families in a way. It feels more like a relaxing day off when you don’t need to go anywhere or do anything and you just hold your baby and enjoy every moment of it, and I just happen to be in the house running around and capturing those intimate family moments. That’s all there is to it.
While this family wanted their house in the pictures, they also wanted gently posed images of a baby alone on a traditional plain backdrop, so we did both. Your newborn photography session doesn’t have to be a carbon copy of some template – the photoshoot is about you and your family, about how you see your new life with a newborn and how and what you want to remember from this unique experience of entrance into parenthood. I always talk to expecting parents in advance to figure out their vision for the session, their preferences, guide them if they need guidance, or follow their view in terms of style, colors, details, and the whole atmosphere of the newborn photography experience.
