The Best Time for Maternity Photos (And Why Timing Matters)

If you Google “when to do maternity photos,” you’ll probably find the exact same advice everywhere: schedule your session somewhere between 28 and 36 weeks.

That’s a decent baseline—but it leaves out a lot.

It doesn’t account for how your body feels, how your pregnancy is progressing, or how your bump is actually carrying. And if you live in Connecticut, it definitely doesn’t account for our unpredictable weather, shifting seasons, or those humid summer evenings that can make late pregnancy feel twice as hard.

At Hudzen Photography, I look at maternity timing through a practical and artistic lens.

Because the truth is, the best maternity photos aren’t just about having the biggest bump possible. They happen when you still feel comfortable, confident, and able to truly enjoy the experience.

Timing matters more than most people realize.

If you’re already planning ahead, you can explore maternity session pricing and availability before your ideal booking window fills up.

The Sweet Spot for Most Maternity Sessions: 28–32 Weeks

For most expecting moms, the ideal window for a maternity photoshoot in Connecticut is between 28 and 32 weeks.

This tends to be the sweet spot where everything aligns beautifully:

  • Your bump has a distinct, round shape
  • You still feel relatively comfortable moving and posing
  • Swelling and fatigue are often still manageable
  • There’s less risk of baby arriving before your session

Many photography blogs suggest waiting until 35 or 36 weeks so your bump is at its absolute largest.

In reality, waiting too long can be risky.

By late third trimester, even simple movement can feel exhausting. Back discomfort increases, swelling often becomes more noticeable, and sessions can feel physically draining rather than enjoyable.

And babies don’t always follow calendars.

I’ve seen families wait for the “perfect week,” only to have their little one decide to arrive early.

But Timing Isn’t Just About Weeks

This is where maternity planning becomes more personal.

The best timing depends on far more than your due date.

Your comfort, energy, body, season, and overall pregnancy experience all matter.

Here are some important factors most generic advice misses.

1. Every Pregnancy Carries Differently

No two pregnancies look exactly the same.

First pregnancy

First-time moms often carry a little higher and may show later.

For many first pregnancies, around 30–32 weeks feels ideal.

Second or third pregnancy

Your body remembers pregnancy.

Many moms show earlier with subsequent pregnancies, which often means scheduling a bit sooner works best. And of course, don’t forget that being pregnant with a toddler or two on your hands is very different from being pregnant the first time.

Twins or multiples

If you’re expecting twins, I usually recommend scheduling earlier—often around 26–30 weeks.

Twin pregnancies can become physically demanding much sooner, so earlier sessions help ensure comfort.

High-risk or medically complex pregnancies

For high-risk pregnancies, earlier is almost always safer.

The last thing you want is waiting for the “perfect” week and then having to cancel because of bed rest or an early delivery.

2. Connecticut Seasons Can Make or Break Your Session

This is something many national blogs completely overlook.

When planning maternity photography in Connecticut, the season matters almost as much as your gestational timing.

Spring: Soft, airy, and beautifully green

Spring maternity sessions in Connecticut can be stunning.

There’s a short window in May when the fresh greenery looks especially vibrant and luminous. The new leaves almost act like natural reflectors, creating incredibly flattering light.

But spring weather can also be unpredictable, so flexibility matters.

Summer: Beautiful light, but tricky timing

Summer gives us lush landscapes and gorgeous golden light.

But pregnancy and Connecticut humidity can be a difficult combination.

If you’re due in late summer, I strongly recommend sunset or early morning sessions. High heat and humidity can increase swelling and make outdoor sessions much more uncomfortable.

Fall: Peak season for maternity photos

Fall is one of the most popular times for maternity sessions in Connecticut.

The golden light, foliage, and warm earthy colors photograph beautifully.

But peak foliage changes fast. Timing matters—not just by month, but sometimes by week. For fall maternity sessions, I closely watch the Connecticut Fall Foliage Report to time peak color.

Winter: Elegant and timeless

Winter maternity sessions often work beautifully in studio.

They feel clean, minimal, intimate, and timeless—especially with soft fabrics and neutral styling.

For winter due dates, studio sessions are often the most comfortable option.

3. Your Comfort Shows in the Final Images

This may be the most important factor of all.

Maternity photos are about so much more than documenting your bump.

They capture this fleeting season of waiting, anticipation, and transformation.

When you feel physically comfortable, it shows:

  • in your posture
  • in your expressions
  • in your movement
  • in the way you connect with your partner or family

That comfort translates directly into better images.

The goal isn’t just to photograph your pregnancy.

It’s to capture how this chapter felt.

Don’t Wait Too Long to Book

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see.

Many expecting moms start searching for a Connecticut maternity photographer at 28 or 30 weeks.

That’s often too late—especially for fall weekends.

The best time to book your maternity session is usually after your 20-week anatomy scan, during your second trimester. Many families start researching photographers around this time, comparing styles, experience, and maternity photography pricing in Connecticut

That gives us time to:

  • secure the best date
  • plan the perfect location
  • discuss wardrobe
  • create a relaxed, stress-free experience

These Photos Become Part of Your Baby’s Story

Years from now, your child won’t simply see photos of your bump.

They’ll see the beginning of their story. And before you know it, those waiting-for-baby moments turn into sleepy newborn snuggles. Many families who book maternity sessions also begin planning their newborn photography session during this stage.

They’ll see how loved they already were.

They’ll see the anticipation, excitement, and quiet strength that filled this chapter of your life.

Pregnancy can feel long in the moment.

But once it’s gone, it feels incredibly fast.

That’s why timing matters.

Not because there’s one perfect week—but because choosing the right window helps you feel present, comfortable, and truly yourself.

And that’s what makes maternity photos timeless.
