Watermelon Summer Cake Smash / Farmington, CT
Baby Cake Smash is one of my favorite types of photography! Firstly, I am dealing with babies – that in itself is a big reward, secondly, babies at this stage are fairly easy to entertain, thirdly, what can be cuter than a baby digging into a cake?!
Celebrating this cutie-pie’s first birthday, the family wanted to also celebrate the season that she was born into – heat, sun, fun, watermelons and strawberries! So, I set out to work: real watermelons – check, cute pink backdrop – check, a couple flamingoes – why not?…
Discussing and planning Cake Smash theme in advance is really important. The theme needs to have a purpose and meaning – e.g. “watermelons” to celebrate summer when the baby was born, “Peter the rabbit” – to celebrate baby’s favorite book at the time, “first fiesta” – to celebrate baby’s heritage, “flowers” – to celebrate girlhood, plain white – to put all the attention on the baby. Theme doesn’t have to be a complicated subject – even a color that your baby loves, or that matches baby’s room perfectly, can be a theme. The same goes towards decorations – there can be a lot of complicated little things that create an enticing mosaic, or it could be minimal if at all – if that’s your style. Communication is the key here (as well as everywhere for that matter).
Before letting the baby dig into the cake, I always spend some time photographing the baby getting used to the setting, playing with him or her, and just creating cute portraits when the outfit is not all sticky with the cake yet 🙂
And of course, for a Watermelon Cake Smash, real watermelons are a must!
As to the cake itself, you never know how the baby would react. Some plunge in smiling and laughing, others are cautious and try to figure it out first, and some just ignore it completely. And either way is totally fine!!
