Home Family Session/ West Hartford CT Photographer
Buying a new home is so special! Wether it’s a tiny fixer-upper or a gorgeous mansion surrounded by acres of well-maintained land, it’s always exciting, nerve-breaking, and heart-warming. When Jen ( a great attorney and a yoga teacher) approached me to book her Christmas family photoshoot, she requested to be photographed in her own yard. A proud home owner, she wanted to celebrate this new chapter of her life. And, get new Christmas cards , of course 🙂 I am so glad that she did! Her yard is a dream for a family photographer – it boasts a cute little garden filled with blooming hydrangeas, a swing, and gorgeous light. But what’s more important, her family is beaming with their love and affection for each other, and that’s what ultimately transpired in the pictures. There was laughing, and running around, and swinging, and smiling, and a little disciplining of course:)
We got to do quite a few portraits of their little girl. Almost 4 year old, she totally poses like a pro, with her personality shining through those innocent blue eyes! The parents stood farther away while I was taking Addie’s portraits, and she loved it! She was excited, and sassy, and beautiful:)
I hope you love your portraits as much as I do. I’m so thankful to you for choosing me as your photographer for your family photoshoot!
Why Consider a Family Photography Session at Home?
One of the things I love about family photography is that you don’t necessarily need a special location to create beautiful, meaningful portraits. Sometimes, the best location is simply your own home and backyard.
A home family session gives children the freedom to be themselves. Instead of asking them to stand still and smile for an entire session, we can let them play, explore, run around, and interact with their parents and siblings. Those natural moments often become some of the most memorable photographs. And most importantly, they feel comfortable at the get-go and often feel in charge of the experience.
Your home can also make your family photos more personal. Years from now, you’ll be able to look back and remember not only what your children looked like, but also the home where they spent an important part of their childhood.
What Happens During an At-Home Family Session?
I don’t expect everyone to have a perfectly styled home or a picture-perfect backyard. In fact, we usually need much less space than you might think!
Before the session, I’ll help you think about which areas of your home have the best natural light and which spaces might work well for photographs. We may take some portraits indoors and then head outside to the yard if the weather allows.
The session itself is relaxed and allows plenty of room for movement. We might photograph everyone together, spend some time with the children individually, and capture smaller moments between parents and kids.
The goal isn’t to make your family look like you’re posing for a photograph every second. It’s to capture the connection between you—the hugs, laughter, playful moments, and all the little expressions that make your family yours.
