Children Studio Portraits / Farmington CT
Although I mostly do newborn and family photography, I looove doing kids studio portraits! Getting a child to open up, to turn a shy smile into a happy giggle, to be as silly or as serious as their personalities allow them to be, is priceless. Despite a wide smile with teeth being a popular destination for children photography, that’s not my goal (although a desirable bonus :)). My goal is capturing their personalities, with their peculiarities, subtle changes in mood, their differences. I will play around, and joke, and make funny noises to make a child smile and laugh alright, but I also love capturing their expressions at times of quiet contemplation, of being calm, or inquisitive, or apprehensive, or shy, or whatever it is that’s on their mind at the moment. I am not necessarily after their smiles, I am after their eyes – full of joy, of harmony, of curiosity, of wonder, of irony, of their “I”.
Children photography is still portrait photography, whose goal is not only to capture smiles, but to capture personalities, to document each stage of a child’s life, to create a memory of their childhood that would last the lifetime. As children get a little older, we are often so busy running errands, living for the future, preparing our kids for life that we forget to stop for a minute and just observe and absorb, to memorize this plumpness of their cheeks, this openness in their gaze, this timidness in their gentle smiles, this trust and admiration for you in their eyes. As children change, so do our memories of them – we forget all these little things that once made our hearts pound with adoration or pride. This is how human memories work – they fade. Portrait photography serves to reverse that, to capture all details, to imprint them in our memories, forever.
